Maru Cantos

Maru Cantos's painting investigates the possibility of constructing a space that remains open permanently.

The series Architectures adrift It represents a new stage in a research developed over many years, in which the forms present in his previous series gradually evolve from still recognizable references towards an autonomous visual language. This evolution does not imply a rejection of reality, but a transformation in the way painting interprets and constructs it.

Far from representing recognizable architectures, his works generate systems in constant transformation, where planes, rhythms, and voids establish changing relationships without ever settling on a definitive form. Each painting functions as a dynamic structure that organizes itself, decomposes, and reconfigures itself. The window, which had appeared in his previous works as one of the fundamental elements of his pictorial language, ceases to be a depicted motif here and becomes the very condition of painting: the work no longer contains a window; it is the window, an open space through which the gaze can explore new ways of inhabiting and understanding space.

Color abandons all descriptive function to become a structural element. Through a deliberately contained palette, each tone creates tensions, proximities, and distances. The whites, far from acting as simple divisions, introduce pauses, breaths, and thresholds that constantly reorganize the perception of the whole.

The work does not offer a single reading or a predetermined path. Instead, it proposes a field of relationships that is fully activated only through the experience of the gaze. Each viewer rearranges the planes, establishes different connections, and discovers their own balance. The painting remains open because the gaze itself remains open.

Maru Cantos conceives this opening as an invitation to a free and universal perspective. A perspective that does not seek to impose a single interpretation, but to create a shared space where each person can recognize themselves through their own experience. Painting thus becomes a common territory, where the diversity of perspectives finds its place without losing their uniqueness.

Rather than representing a place, Maru Cantos creates an experience of perception. Space does not exist before the painting or is exhausted by it; it arises from the constant dialogue between the forms, the work itself, and the viewer.

For more than four decades, Maru Cantos has developed an artistic practice centered on painting as a field of formal investigation. Her work has evolved from figurative representation towards a unique abstract language, in which color, fragmentation, and the relationships between forms give rise to compositions that dialogue with architecture, the landscape, and the perception of space.

His trajectory has been nurtured by continuous training, sustained artistic research, the study of contemporary art, and regular participation in workshops, study trips, and encounters with other artists. He is currently part of the Colectivo (M)arte, led by the artist Vicky Herreros.

In 2026, he began his collaboration with LUMBRE Gallery, which supports the development and international projection of his practice in the field of contemporary art. That same year, his work was presented at JUSTMAD 2026, held at the Neptuno Palace in Madrid.
