MARÍA ARGÜELLES
María Argüelles (Madrid, 1988) is a visual artist and predoctoral researcher at the Complutense University of Madrid. Her academic background spans Clinical Psychology (2012) and Fine Arts (2017), both completed at UCM—an intersection that informs the perceptual and affective dimensions of her practice.
María’ work unfolds through a sustained engagement with the meticulous and the latent. Her research gravitates toward subtle, often overlooked encounters—moments that arrest attention and invite proximity. She explores what remains concealed, buried, or only partially disclosed. In this sense, her practice constructs atmospheric fields rather than explicit narratives: spaces that operate through suggestion, immersion, and sensory ambiguity. These environments do not fully reveal themselves; instead, they envelop the viewer in a delicate tension between presence and absence, functioning as thresholds—quiet invitations to enter, linger, and continue unfolding meaning.
She has developed her practice across both solo and group exhibitions. In 2011 she was awarded the Young Artist Prize at the 8th National Painting Competition Pincel Verde (Madrid). In 2015 she participated in JustMad with the project La Grieta, and in 2016 she joined Galería Espositivo (Madrid).
